About

In the early 1900’s, Francesco Colantuonio, a farmer and mason, immigrated to America. Eventually settling in Wakefield, Massachusetts he continued his work as a farmer and opened a greenhouse. In the 1950’s, Francesco’s son, Gaetano Colantuonio opened his extension of the family business, Colantuonio’s Flower Stand, in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. This seasonal shop was only open in the spring and at Christmas time. Gladiolas, Gypsophelia (Baby’s Breath) and Asters were grown on the two acres of land behind the shop. These flowers were sold here at the Tewksbury location and were transported to the Wakefield shop and to the markets in Boston. By 1959, a permanent shop with one greenhouse was opened for year-round business and the name was changed to Tewksbury Florist.

By the 1970’s, Gaetano’s son Frank had taken his place at the Tewksbury location. Huge changes began to occur with the opening of a garden center and additional greenhouses. The growing fields for cut flowers were replaced with new greenhouses for potted plants. Poinsettias, Easter Lilies, Tulips, and flowers were grown in large quantities to be sold from the shop. In 1976, the name was expanded to Tewksbury Florist & Greenery, Inc as a result of the changes and expansion.

The 1980’s brought additional crops to the production line. In addition to the grown flowers, the Greenery began to carry annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees. A total of six greenhouses were on site to accommodate both growing and selling.

The third generation joined the business in the 1990’s which added a Landscaping and Masonry component to the business. Larger, sturdier greenhouses replaced the original ones to allow for the new growth.

Today the shop, more commonly called the Tewksbury Greenery, covers more than 3,000 square feet. Besides the continuation of our full service Florist, our gift line has grown immensely. We have a huge selection of flags, stepping-stones, and garden accessories. Our Garden Center, with over 17,000 square feet of space, now includes eight greenhouses. Year round, the greenhouses are busy growing plants for the upcoming seasons and holidays. Thousands of annuals and perennials are sold in the spring and summer. Fall garden mums give color from August to October. By Thanksgiving, Poinsettias are the rage and Christmas trees, garland, and wreaths are ready to be sold.

Whether you are a long time customer or a first time visitor, we look forward to seeing you soon at the Tewksbury Florist and Greenery.
